Water Source
Hazards: Generally, coming from a municipal or well supply, but can also be created via a holding tank. The water may contain sediment, sludge and/or rust.
Preventative Measures: Clean the cooling towers of any rust, etc thoroughly at least twice per year. Use antimicrobial treatments if the incoming water comes from a nearby reservoir, river or lake.

Hazards: Flow velocity, temperature and other environmental factors will, of course, vary.
Preventative Measures: This system should be designed to help water circulate throughout whenever the system is operating. The system should be complete with full chemical treatment of the water. Keep the system clean by removing any and all dirt and debris.
Biofilms Significance
Hazards: Dust, dirt and other debris can enter the cooling tower water during the cooling process. The amount of material can be extensive depending on where the tower is located. The presence of biofilms is crucial for Legionella survival and spread.
Preventative Measures: It is recommended to use an environmentally safe dispersant or detergent to rid the area of biofilm and sediments. Make sure to follow proper maintenance and cleaning procedures at all times.
Disinfection Process
Hazards: Since cooling towers are open to the environment, systems can quickly become recolonized with micro bacteria.
Preventative Measures: Alternate between two non-oxidizing biocides to vary the antimicrobial stresses in the tower.
