Closed circuit cooling towers are commonly known as evaporative fluid coolers. These towers will keep your system cool and contaminant-free thanks to its closed loop. Within this model, two separate fluid circuits are created, which results in spray water mixing with outside air.
Closed Circuit Cooling Tower Operation
With a similar operation to open cooling towers, one of the only differences with closed circuit towers is the heat load being transferred from process fluid to ambient air. This is performed through a heat exchange coil found exclusively in these models. The coil helps to isolate the process fluid from the outside air while keeping it cool, simultaneously.
The next step of the process involves the creation of two separate fluid circuits. These circuits include an external one, in which the process fluid circulates inside the coil. Heat is then transferred from the internal circuit, processed through the coil to spray water, then released into the atmosphere.
Combined Flow Configuration
Combined flow will utilize both fill and a heat exchange coil to complete a heat transfer. The fill addition will reduce evaporation in the coil section, drastically reducing the potential for scaling and fouling. Closed circuit towers use parallel flow of air and spray water over the coil. Crossflow water and air flow through the fill during this process.
Parallel flow, of course, means water and air flow in the same direction over the coil. Process fluid will travel upward to the top of the coil, increasing efficiency by bringing the coldest spray water in contact with process fluid.
Counterflow Configuration
In counterflow, airflow goes in the opposite direction of the spray water. Air will travel vertically through the closed circuit tower, with spray water going downward over the coil. Process fluid will then flow from top to bottom throughout the coil.
